The Exercise in Çanakkale Comes to an End

Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca stated that the international MED EU MODEX 2023 Çanakkale Medical Field Exercise was designed on the assumption of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake and that search and rescue, medical rescue, healthcare services and humanitarian aid activities were rehearsed in this context.

Minister Koca stated that mainly international medical field practices were carried out in the 4-day exercise organized under the coordination of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency within the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Koca said that they participated in the exercise, which aims to strengthen the preparedness and response capacities of EU member and participating countries to health disasters and emergencies, with a large number of teams and equipment, and added:

"The drill scenario was designed as if a 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in Çanakkale on September 17, 2023 at 00.34 a.m., and search and rescue, medical rescue, healthcare services and humanitarian aid activities were rehearsed within the framework of this imaginary scenario. The Ministry of Health offered a great range of resources during the drill. These include such teams and vehicles as the National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE), UMKE ATAK, UMKE EMT Type2 and UMKE EMT Type1 Mobile Hospitals and Emergency Response Unit, 112 air and land ambulances, sea ambulance, General Directorate of Public Health Mobile Microbiology Reference Laboratory, Mobile National Public Health Laboratory and Mobile Public Health Team. The Ministry of Health is one of the key actors in international cooperation and disaster emergency management."
