Within the framework of the 2nd International Traditional and Complementary Medicine (GETAT) organized under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, Health Minister Dr. Fahrettin Koca presented the awards to Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Koçyiğit, Prof. Dr. Cemal Çevik and Dr. Duygu Dayanır for their studies.
“Throughout our education life, we were not informed about many of the topics discussed in this Congress. Because the traditional and complementary medicine practices were not accepted and particularly rejected by the orthodox medicine. Nowadays, health professionals are gradually getting away from this approach. Furthermore, WHO which was refusing the traditional and complementary medicine practices for years also has adopted an approach that supports the handling of these practices on a scientific basis as they are the result of cultural accumulation in the world.
The World Health Organization encourages GETAT practices as one of the ways to strengthen modern health systems. In our country, these applications are structured to be integrated in modern medicine. First of all, a regulation was issued to authorize only physicians for such practices. In this way, it is forbidden for people who do not have education to perform under-the-counter applications. Then we published the ‘Regulation on Clinical Research in Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices’. With this regulation, we aim to ensure that the application is performed by the right person, in the right case, in the right dose, by evidence-based methods. We will evaluate GETAT applications on the scientific background and disseminate them if they meet the appropriate conditions” said Dr. Koca in his speech.
Health Minister Dr. Koca expressed the importance of rewarding successful works in Traditional Medicine Practices and Researches within the framework of the Congress. In this regard, Lifetime Achievement Award is presented in the memory of Avicenna for his contributions to the medicine at his age, while GETAT Science Award is presented in the memory of Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin for the development of surgical methodology. On the other hand, GETAT Young Researcher Award is presented in the memory of Prof. Dr. Süheyl Ünver for his studies and researches.
After the speech of the Minister, the awards were presented to the award-winning physicians.

Prof. Dr. Abdürrahim Koçyiğit was presented the Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin Science Award for Traditional and Complementary Medicine and Dr. Cemal Çevik won the Avicenna Traditional and Complementary Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award.
