Increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMD), developing new resistance mechanisms and multidrug-resistant bacteria are among the factors that threaten public health on a global scale. As a result of the formation of resistance to antibiotics, while antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective, serious difficulties are observed in the treatment process of infections. This situation not only causes the disease to spread, but also increases the risk of death. In order for antibiotics used in the treatment of diseases to be also used effectively in the coming years, antibiotic use must be managed rationally. Unnecessary and inappropriate use of antibiotics in situations where they are not needed leads to the formation of antibiotic resistance. For this reason, antibiotics should only be used in the appropriate amount and duration when prescribed by the physicians. World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week By declaring the week that includes November 18, between 18-24 November, as "World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week", it is aimed to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance on a global scale and to encourage practices preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance. According to WHO data, AMD, which is listed among the top 10 global public health threats, is estimated to cause 10 million deaths annually worldwide by 2050.
