Deputy Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Emine Alp Meşe attended the Annual Conference on Enhancing Quality of Mental Health Services organized in Ankara within the framework of “Social Inclusion of Persons with Mental Disabilities”.
In her speech at the Conference organized by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services and World Health Organization (WHO), Prof. Dr. Alp Meşe reminded that social exclusion of the mentally disabled persons is a global public health problem and a human rights issue.
“In recent years, Turkey has made great progress in the field of mental health services. To begin with, “National Mental Health Policy” prepared by the Ministry of Health in 2006 is based on the 7 modules recommended by the WHO for mental health policies. Prepared based on this National Mental Health Policy and promoting to include the needs and personal decisions of the patients in the treatment, the National Mental Health Action Plan (2011-2023) was initiated by the Ministry of Health, which enabled establishment of Community Mental Health Centers as of 2011. There are currently 172 Community Mental Health Centers in 78 provinces, and they will be even more effective with spread of healthy life centers, provision of community-based treatment and rehabilitation services and strengthening of social support services. In this regard, it is highly important to cooperate with the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services for social inclusion of persons with chronic mental disabilities” said Prof. Dr. Alp Meşe in her speech.
